NSVL run an extremely successful junior programme, following the Royal Lifesaving Society awards. Lifesaving is a great way for kids to learn lifesaving skills while having fun and keeping fit at the same time, and with a weekly pool session and beach training in the summer NSVL can offer the full range of activities for our younger lifesavers.
Young lifesavers learn lifesaving skills and first aid which one day could save someone's life, and gain the perfect grounding for becoming lifeguards in the future, whether as a part time job or to lead into a career in leisure. There is also the opportunity to take part in lifesaving competitions.
Children aged 8 upwards can join our Rookie Lifeguard programme, while those 13 and over can take part in RLSS’s Survive & Save course. At age 14, we encourage those who have been involved in Rookies and Survive & Save to become Assistant Teachers. This gives them experience teaching younger children and looks great on job and University applications in later life.
Due to the high demand for places, a waiting list is now in operation for new Rookies and Youth Lifesavers. Our minimum entry age is 8 years old, in line with the Rookie Lifeguard programme. Children under 8 years of age can be put on the waiting list but will not be considered for places until their 8th birthday. All new Rookies will be swim tested before being offered a space, and should have reached Stage 7 of the Learn to Swim Framework.
