Boxing Day Swim 2016

The Annual NSVL Boxing Day Swim is nearly here! This page contains all the information you need to know, so if you’re planning on taking part then please read it all carefully.

Please be aware that while the swim is a fun occasion, the water is cold (normally about 6oC). Most people only stay in for a few minutes and it is certainly not a challenge to stay in as long as possible. If you have any underlying health conditions that you feel may affect your participation in the swim, please consult your GP.

Who can take part?

Anyone! However, please be aware that parents/guardians are responsible for supervising anyone under the age of 16. If you have any underlying health conditions that you feel may affect your participation, please consult your GP.

All those participating in the swim must register. Pre-registration is available until Sunday 11th December:  This can be done by completing the ‘member’ form available at the bottom of this page.

For those who aren’t current members you can still pre-register for the swim at a cost of £5 per person using the ‘Day Membership’ form available at the bottom of this page. NSVL is a registered charity and all funds raised will go towards our building fund.

All those who have pre-registered must sign in at the swim on Boxing Day.

Both annual and day members can register for the swim on Boxing Day itself, but places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served, basis. Registration on the day is free for members and their families or £5 to become a member for the day.

Commemorative t-shirt

As ever we have produced a commemorative t-shirt for the swim. For orders received by Sunday 11th December, the cost is £5 per t-shirt and your t-shirt will be available to collect on the day. Any orders received after 11th December, or bought on the day, will be £8 per t-shirt.

You can pre-order t-shirts by downloading and returning the form at the bottom of this page with payment. Please send forms and payment to the address on the form.

Although the main aim of our swim is to have fun and carry on what has become a great tradition, we know that some people enjoy being sponsored to take part to help raise funds for the club.

If you’d like to raise money for the club, please use the official sponsorship form (available for download at the bottom of this page) – it means we can reclaim Gift Aid on donations. Sponsorship money can be returned on the day itself or at a pool session when they resume in the new year.

What to bring with you

Due to very limited changing space, we advise that you arrive with your swimming costume under your clothes. Please also make sure you bring:

•Footwear to wear on the beach and in the sea (e.g. old trainers) – there may be sharp objects underfoot.

•A towel to dry off afterwards.

•Lots of warm clothes to get changed into, including a hat.

•If possible, someone who can look after your clothes and towel while you’re in the sea.

The swim takes place from the NSVL headquarters, Tynemouth Longsands.

Timings for the day

•10.15am – registration opens.

•10.55am – registration closes

•11.00am – all swimmers enter the water

•11.00am onwards – refreshments available

•11.15am – any remaining swimmers leave the water

•11.30am – certificate presentation

Certificates of participation

In previous years we have produced certificates for all those who have taken part in the swim. However, many certificates haven’t been collected so this year we are introducing a slight change.

All those who participate can opt to receive a certificate by ticking the relevant box on the sign-in form on the day. If you don’t tick the box on the sign-in form, a certificate won’t be produced for you. Depending on the weather conditions, certificates will be presented at 11.30am so please try and stay to receive yours if possible. If you can’t stay for the certificate presentation then they can be collected at the club’s pool sessions in January. In the event of bade weather, certificates will be emailed out to participants.

Hot drinks will be available for swimmers and spectators from 11.00am. While we don’t charge for these, we ask for donations to help cover the cost of the drinks and also to raise funds for the club.

Safety cover

Stewards, beach lifeguards and first aid personnel will be supervising the swim. Please obey any instructions they give you.

Instructor Courses

NSVL will be running 2 courses in September to give instructors the
opportunity to gain RLSS teaching qualifications.  This is an excellent
progression for those who have taken the Assistant Teacher qualification,
though it is not required for candidates to have any previous
qualifications.  They will equip candidates to plan and lead Rookie and
Survive and Save sessions alongside a team of assistants.

The course details are below and are open to all members who meet the
relevant age requirements:

*Rookie Instructor Course*
Saturday 10th September 2016 (all day, times TBC)
Minimum age 16 years old

*Survive and Save Instructor Course*
Sunday 11th September (all day, times TBC)
Minimum age 17 years old
**Please note that candidates must complete 10 hours of teaching following
the course to gain the qualification.

NSVL relies on volunteers to run sessions and pass on their expertise to
younger members, therefore NSVL will cover the cost of these qualifications
for instructors who can commit to using them for the benefit of the club.
Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Sunday 4th September to register for either or
both of these courses.
