This is a reminder that there will be no pool sessions on 31st March and 7th April.

We will be back on Saturday 14th April for our last block of pool sessions which will run until Saturday 26th May, after that we swap to our Summer Beach Sessions on a Saturday morning at Longsands.

These will run from Saturday 9th June until the 14th July, more details will be sent out after Easter.

There will also be no pool session on Saturday 5th May which is the first May bank holiday weekend.

Michael Terence Weedy

Mike Weedy

The club was saddened to learn that one of its founder members, Michael Terence Weedy, died suddenly yesterday (26 March 2018).

Mike played a huge part in the early days of the club and introduced many new members from his pool lifeguard courses, including our current Chair Donna Robson 18 years ago. After retirement he was still involved conducting assessments.

Mike was also a fixture at the old Whitley Bay Leisure Pool then the Lakeside Centre as Swimming Coordinator and teacher, along with Whitley Bay Amateur Swimming Club.

He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his family.

Boxing Day Swim 2017

The Annual NSVL Boxing Day Swim is nearly here! This page contains all the information you need to know, so if you’re planning on taking part then please read it all carefully.

Please be aware that while the swim is a fun occasion, the water is cold (normally about 6°C). Most people only stay in for a few minutes and it is certainly not a challenge to stay in as long as possible. If you have any underlying health conditions that you feel may affect your participation in the swim, please consult your GP.

Who can take part?

Anyone! However, please be aware that parents/guardians are responsible for supervising anyone under the age of 16. If you have any underlying health conditions that you feel may affect your participation, please consult your GP.

All those participating in the swim must register.

Pre-registration is now closed. All those who have pre-registered must sign in at the swim on Boxing Day.

Both members and non-members can still register for the swim on Boxing Day itself, but places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served, basis. Registration on the day is still free for members and £5 for non-members.

Commemorative t-shirt

As ever we have produced a commemorative t-shirt for the swim. The deadline for pre-orders has passed, but t-shirts can still be bought on the day, for £9 each. These will be sold on a first come first served basis, so get there early!

Although the main aim of our swim is to have fun and carry on what has become a great tradition, we know that some people enjoy being sponsored to take part to help raise funds for the club. NSVL is a registered charity and all funds raised will go towards our building fund.

If you’d like to raise money for the club, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for the official sponsorship form – it means we can reclaim Gift Aid on donations. Sponsorship money can be returned on the day itself or at a pool session when they resume in the new year.

What to bring with you

Due to very limited changing space, we advise that you arrive with your swimming costume under your clothes. Please also make sure you bring:

  • Footwear to wear on the beach and in the sea (e.g. old trainers) – there may be sharp objects underfoot.
  • A towel to dry off afterwards.
  • Lots of warm clothes to get changed into, including a hat.
  • If possible, someone who can look after your clothes and towel while you’re in the sea.

The swim takes place from the NSVL headquarters, Tynemouth Longsands.

Timings for the day

  • 10.15am – registration opens.
  • 10.55am – registration closes
  • 11.00am – all swimmers enter the water
  • 11.00am onwards – refreshments available
  • 11.15am – any remaining swimmers leave the water
  • 11.30am – certificate presentation

Certificates of participation

All those who participate can opt to receive a certificate by ticking the relevant box on the sign-in form on the day. If you don’t tick the box on the sign-in form, a certificate won’t be produced for you. Depending on the weather conditions, certificates will be presented at 11.30am so please try and stay to receive yours if possible. If you can’t stay for the certificate presentation then they can be collected at the club’s pool sessions in January. In the event of bad weather, certificates will be emailed out to participants.

Hot drinks will be available for swimmers and spectators from 11.00am. While we don’t charge for these, we ask for donations to help cover the cost of the drinks and also to raise funds for the club.

Safety cover

Stewards, beach lifeguards and first aid personnel will be supervising the swim. Please obey any instructions they give you.
